Uterine Fibroids and Cardiovascular Risk: Implications for Clinical Practice

uterine fibroids and cardiovascular risk implications for clinical practice

12/11/2025

A study of more than 2.7 million women found uterine fibroids were associated with an 81% higher overall cardiovascular disease risk, with women under 40 showing a more than 3.5-fold increase.

Investigators used a large cohort with up to 10 years of follow-up. Primary endpoints included coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral artery disease and a composite atherosclerotic outcome. Models adjusted for standard cardiometabolic and sociodemographic confounders.

The uterine fibroids association was consistent across racial and ethnic groups, reinforcing a disease-specific pattern tied to the main finding.
